Brittany is a graduate of the University of Kansas law school, and was selected from her graduating class to receive an award recognizing her dedication to the study of employment law. Brittany has demonstrate great skill and dedication to helping everyday, working people who experience harassment, discrimination, retaliation, or work place injuries. Brittany truly has been a great part of our team for several years as a law clerk, but it is great to officially welcome her as licensed attorney!

Missouri Lawyers Media has selected Robert A. Bruce as one of Missouri's 2023 Up and Coming Lawyers. 54 attorneys were selected for the annual award which "recognizes early-career lawyers who demonstrate professional excellence while making a positive impact on their profession and communities." Missouri Lawyers Weekly has selected Robert A. Bruce as one of Missouri's 2022 most influential appellate advocates. The award is given to "the lawyers behind the most significant appellate decisions of the year." Bruce's work on Poke v. Independence School District, which recognized the right of municipal employees to bring wrongful discharge claims based on the exercising of workers' compensation rights, helped to earn him this honor. The Missouri Supreme Court has recognized that public employees working for municipalities, school districts, counties, and numerous other public entities have a right to pursue damages against their employer when they are fired for exercising work comp rights. Though this right has existed since 1974 for employees of businesses, four prior Court of Appeals decision had been read as denying the right to public employees. We were able to get this erroneous interpretation of the law corrected, and tens of thousands of Missouri public employees finally are entitled to vindication! The Kansas Court of Appeals determined that a loss by an injured worker at a non-binding, non-appeal preliminary hearing does not prevent that employee from prevailing a subsequent wrongful discharge lawsuit. This was a hard-fought case that protects the workers of Kansas. Here are links to the opinion and the oral argument.

On September 20, 2021, Dan Doyle and Robert Bruce tried their first jury trial since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic ! It was a highly contested case with severe factual disputes being offered by both sides. The jury returned a verdict in our client’s favor—and only deliberated for 7 minutes before doing so! The client was ecstatic with the result, and so are we!
